White papers offer an effective & practical way to introduce your book to prospective readers and your social media followers.

White papers can be far more compelling way to market your book than simply offering a table of chapters and a sample chapter.

A white paper permits you to interpret and explain your book, which is far more effective than simply providing a table of contents and sample chapter.

White paper success story

In my latest Content Marketing Institute blog post, 4 Keys to Compelling Content Marketing with White Papers, I interviewed Joe Pulizzi and Robert Rose, creators of The Content Marketing Framework, to find out what’s involved in creating a compelling white paper.

The reason I approached them with the idea of a case study interview is that their Content Marketing Framework is one of the best examples of white paper marketing, even though it’s just 10 pages long!

Lessons in white paper success

Lessons learned from my transcribed interview with Joe Pulizzi and Robert Rose include:

  • Goals and objectives. Joe and Robert thoroughly discussed their objectives before writing.
  • Process. They had an agreed-upon process for co-authoring the various drafts the white paper went through before publication.
  • Deadlines. Before they began writing, they had established a timeline with agreed upon deadlines for each step in preparing their white paper.
  • Involving others. Most important, Joe and Robert understood that the success of the white paper involved more than just their words; the contributions of others were equally important.
