Write a book anywhere – Mindjet’s MindManager for iPads & iPhones

Posted September 19th @ 12:34 am by Roger C. ParkerPrint

Plan  & write a book anywhere, with Mindjet’s MindManager Mobile apps.

Now you can create mind maps of articles, books, blog posts, book proposals, and more on yourApple  iPad or iPhone.

No longer do you have to scribble handwritten notes on scraps of paper, or the back of a napkin, and–later–try to decipher them. (Been there, done that!)

When an idea for a brand-building book occurs to you, if you’re within reach of your iPhone or iPad–and, Who isn’t these days?–you can quickly and easily create and email a mind map like the one above, one that visually displays the hierarchy and details of your ideas.

I created the above map of this week’s blog posts in just a few minutes–within a half-hour of downloading Mindjet’s free Mindmanager Mobile app for the iPad.

Then–later–as a passenger in a car, I downloaded Mindjet’s MindManager Mobile app for the iPhone, and quickly created and sent another mind map!

Why Mindjet’s Mobile Apps matter

Mindjet’s MindManager Mobile apps for iPads and iPhones are important because planning must precede writing.

The sooner you create a structure for your writing–whether it’s a blog content plan for an upcoming week (like the above) or a table of contents for your book–the easier it will be to write and complete your project.

The most important part of a project is at when you come up with a great idea. That’s the best time to capture and expand your ideas, displaying their relationships to each other.

Getting started and taking action is the hard part

It’s all too easy to have great ideas for books and blog posts–they often show up when least expected.

But, if you don’t immediately act your ideas, your inner Resistance can quickly kick in and deplete your energy and enthusiasm.

Seth Godin and Stephen Pressfield have written a lot about Resistance, the way humans are hard-wired to resist change; change–even positive change, like moving forward on a writing or marketing project–can be dangerous!  (Learn more about Resistance here, here, and here.)

But, when you create a simple mind map like the above, and email it to yourself, the die has been cast; your project is moving forward and gaining momentum!

At this point, all that remain is to:

  • Refine. When you return to your office or home, download the mind map to your laptop or computer, and continue developing your ideas using MindManager, or one of the mind mapping software programs that read MindManager files. You can add new ideas, add notes, rearrange topics, edit what you’ve written, and add start dates and deadlines to each task.
  • Export. Then, when you’re finished, simply export your mind map to your word processor or presentation program for final editing and formatting.

Each time you eliminate an obstacle, or a potential delay, between an idea and a finished project, you’re increasing the likelihood that your book or project will be finished on time and within budget!

Initial impressions of Mindjet’s Mobile Apps for iPads & iPhones

Mindjet’s MindManager Mobile apps for the iPad and iPhone put your fingers to work. You’ll quickly appreciate the freedom from reaching for a mouse to open menus and select commands.

  • Tap and hold your fingers on a topic to add subtopics above, below, or next to it.
  • Tap twice to add, delete, edit, or format text. This is also how you add notes and graphics to a topic, or change the topic’s shape or colors.
  • Tap twice and hold your finger to display a context menu where you can copy and topics and subtopics.
  • Squeeze or expand your fingers to zoom in for a closer look, or zoom out for an overview view. Touch the screen with the tip of your finger and drag to reposition the map to show a different part of the map.
  • Tap anywhere on the map to reveal the familiar iPad and iPhone icons send a copy of your map, create a new map, or open a previously-created map.

The above are just a few of the ways that Mindjet’s MindManager Mobile apps for the iPad and iPhone make it easy to write a book anywhere, using Apple’s intuitive, finger-based, interface. If you’re already a MindManager user, you’ll find it an easy transition to Mindjet’s Mobile apps. Great article, Roger! I love the image of the die being cast, and the technique of keeping yourself in motion.

However, I much prefer the iPhone App called MINDO.

It does all of the same things as the Mindjet App, but the maps are more attractive visually.

When reading Roger’s words I check them all. When Roger suggested learning about resistance I checked all three here locations.

Wow! I am GLAD that I checked the third “here” because what Roger had hidden behind that door was: Do The Work by Steven Pressfield. This is the first and only advice about HOW to created passion for giving up the habits which have been a drag on my productivity — and it is great, really reading!

    Thanks Roger!

    Dear Ben:
Thank you so much for your kind words, calling attention to Stephen Pressfield’s Do The Work which really helped me.

I’m doing an in-depth profile of these books next week.

    Thanks again for your comment.

Thank you, Will, for the comment and suggestion.

Don’t forget, you’re the one who introduced me to mind mapping about 10 years ago–you’re always on the forefront of new ideas.

    I’ll check out Mindo.
    Roger

PS- I rarely include the Ph.D. credential in what I write, but after reading “Do the Work” I realized that PhD stands for: Procrastination heralds Disaster!
