Consistent writing creates great content a little at a time, as the Heath Brothers show

heath-brothers-fast-four-5Tuesday’s writing tip of the week

The best way to create great content is to write consistently; as shown by a partial view of the monthly columns in Fast Company written by the Heath Brothers, authors of Made to Stick and Switch: How to Change when Change is Hard.

Consistent writing quickly builds equity & ability

It never ceases to amaze me, for example, how quickly monthly columns add up, creating content that can be revisited, repurposed, and reused in numerous ways. (Depending, of course, on the contractual relationship you have with the media where the content first appears.)

Consistent writing also helps you become a better and faster writer. Anything you do on a consistent basis makes you better at it, as described in Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers.

Success comes from process & consistent writing

You may not be able to immediately ink a deal for a monthly column with Fast Company the way that the Heath Brothers did, (here’s another view of their columns), but you can do something similar!

You can create great content, a little at a time, and build for the future, by writing columns for local or trade publications, creating a blog, publishing a newsletter, presenting monthly teleseminars, or preparing podcasts and YouTube videos. But, you have to start somewhere and you have to keep going as the content mounts up! Share your favorite content creation tip, below, as a comment.

    Hi Roger,

You’re absolutely right about consistently writing small chunks of content and the equity it builds over time.

I’ve followed your specific advice for the last two years, and now I’ve written (soon to be published)an online marketing book for small businesses because of it.

And most of the book’s content came from previous blog posts and articles I’ve written. If you would have told me two years ago that I was going to write a book, I would have told you you’re out of your mind…But I would have been wrong.

So I can tell you firsthand that there are a lot of advantages to writing a little at a time, but consistently.

    Thanks for the great advice!

Oh… and the title of my upcoming book will be “How Local Small Businesses Can Get New Customers On The Internet”.

    Dear Merrill:
Thank you for sharing your thoughts…and, definitely, congratulations on your upcoming book!

I look forward to seeing it. I’ve learned a lot from your http://www.webcontentnh.com blog, which I recommend to readers throughout the country.
