Thursday’s profit tip for authors

Are you visually communicating the benefits you offer? Or, are you continuing to depend on website visitors to read your message?

Visuals communicate at a glance, especially when they’re as bright and simple as those used by OrangeSoda (above). Visuals tell stories that don’t have to be read to make an impact.

Visuals can instantly communicate a firm’s benefits while differentiating it from the competition. Visuals can be used to communicate the process the firm uses to help its clients solve their problems and achieve their goals.

And, as shown above, the colors used in the visuals can reinforce the firm’s name and provide the basis of a memorable branding campaign.

What’s your favorite information graphic?

Are you presently using a key graphic to visually communicate your firm’s benefits or the way you–or your book–use to help clients and readers attain their goals? Share their URLs as comments, below.

I’d also like to know your favorite information graphics you’ve found on the web. Share your discoveries with others as a comment, below. And, before you go, check out another one of my favorite examples of a storytelling graphic here.

So do you think it is a good idea to use visual advertising? Do you think it is more expressive than using words?

    Dear Jo:
    I really do.

I agree that it is frequently overdone, especially advertising that is “graphic designer” driven, rather than “marketing” driven.

Too many design decisions are made on the basis of “I like what it looks like!” rather than basic marketing concerns like “What is the message?” “Who is our reader?” and “What do they want to know?”

I think it’s important to reference Tony Buzan’s decades of research into mind mapping, and the numerous studies that have shown that a design + copy partnership communicate and are remembered far more than either alone.

BTW, I like the banner graphic at the top of your blog. Great, instant, communication of (presumably) your approach.

    Thanks for commenting.
