On this Wednesday’s Guerrilla Marketing Association expert interview, I’ll be interviewing Jonathan Fields, author of the top-selling Career Renegade: How to Earn a Great Living Doing What You Love. We’ll be discussing his experiences planning and writing his book, plus details of how he’s promoting it on his Career Renegade home page, shown below.
Jonathan Fields’ Career Renegade site shows how far WordPress blog-based websites have come in the past few years. Here are some of the lessons you can learn from Jonathan Fields’ website:
- Single-screen, scroll-free navigation. The home page fits in one screen: the 4 major destinations that visitors are likely to want to visit are clearly identified: free download, blog, events, and free 16-hour training program. No scrolling is required.
- Layout. Color and layout are used to organize the links offering access to the 4 major areas of the site. Note the way the graphics and text in the three banners at the bottom occupy the same amount of space.
- Restrained colors. Although color plays a major role in projecting a bright and optimistic image, only a few colors are used. The red and green colors unify the 4 major areas of the with the background, and gray is used to separate the top and bottom halves of the site.
- Consistency. As you explore the blog and the inside pages of the site, note the consistent use of the same colors.
- Readability. Note the comfortable combination of type size and line length which contributes to easy reading of the blog postings.
- Cost-effective. Although Jonathan Fields and his team obviously know their way around the web, the site is based on one of Brian Gardner’s WordPress themes. These look great and can save great amounts of set-up time.
The text on Jonathan Field’s website home page is carefully created as the design. Note how it’s all about the benefits the website visitors will gain from reading his book or downloading sample chapters or signing-up for his free e-course for readers. Jonathan doesn’t talk about himself or his qualifications: he concentrates on visitor benefits.
