Tuesday’s writing tip for authors

Writing articles for online distribution is one of the best ways you can write and promote your book. It costs nothing to write and submit an article to online sites like Ezinearticles.com, yet each article takes you a step closer to a published book and enhances your search engine visibility as an expert in your field.

Many people fail to take full advantage of article marketing, however, because they lack a system. Here are some tips to help you create a system for efficiently writing a series of articles in your field.

  1. Start with a strong series concept. Base your articles on a series concept, rather than starting each article with a blank screen. Choose a series topic. These can be as a series of appreciations about the individuals who have contributed the most to your field, reviews of the most important books in your field, or a glossary of important terms in your field. One of my coaching clients, for example, is creating a series of articles profiling cities in the United States where you can retire without a car.
  2. Make a list of all possible titles within the series. Creating a list offers many significant advantages. A written list ensures you won’t run out of ideas, and you have a place to write down ideas for new articles as they occur to you. topics . A list also gives you an easy way to track your progress as you put a check-mark by each idea as you complete it.
  3. Make a list of the repeating elements you want to include in each article. For example, you can begin each article with a statement of relevance; a description of why you have included this topic in your article series. Next, describe the three or four most important aspects, or “big ideas,” associated with each topic. Conclude with a resource list where readers can learn more. Resources can be located anywhere on the web, although–ideally–you should point to specific pages on your website where readers can learn more.
  4. Create a profile.

    Wow! You are ambitious.

While I hope to write 10 articles in the next 100 days, I simply can not imagine how to write 100. Further, I’d be afraid of giving away my entire book (which is non-fiction.) Why buy the book if I’m giving away 100 pages for free? I don’t get it.
