New Random House publishing strategy suggests revenue opportunities for e-book and self-published authors

Thursday’s profit tip

Random House, as an article in the Wall Street Journal reported this week, is going to sell downloads of individual chapters of Chip Heath and Dan Heath’s Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die. Made to Stick is one of my first audio shorts and mind maps. Members can access my comments and mind map here.

Individual chapters are available for download for just $2.99 each. Click here to to visit the page on their website where individual chapters of Made to Stick can be download. The article also described Made to Stick’s great success, with over 200,000 covers sold since it appeared in 2006.

Authors selling e-books online may want to explore the idea of individual chapter downloads. I suspect many authors may find that revenues from chapter downloads may be one of the cases where “the sum of the parts is greater than the whole.”

Much of the discussion on the future of e-books focuses on the public’s unwillingness to read period, which may be a function of price point. $2.99 per chapter won’t correct that. I posted at http://www.frugalfiction.com where $3.99 per book might entice readers back - think Walmart for readers.

Yah revenues will be higher by selling the individual chapters rather than selling the whole at a time .This is more beneficial for authors.

  3. I have a book that I hand wrote on self-help for women on holistic mind body wellness on 15 different areas, ranging from fitness nutrition to self-esteem and stress management, etc. I have never published a book, but I started this in 2001, after going to college and was a college professor in Health and Exercise Science for over 16 years. I then opened my own fitness facility after being general manager over 5 different Corporate gyms, such as Bally’s, L.A. Fitness and Gold’s. My fitness center was 10,000 square foot over a 7 year period had about 1200 female members that I helped achieve their personal goals. I have had alot of knowledge and worked in the field over 25 years. Each chapter also has an inspirational quote, that I hand wrote. I also have my father’s book who passes away, had his PHD, and wrote a manuscript which has been copyrighted and ISBN, I want to add a chapter or two and have the book published for my father in dedication. I need help on both these issues. Thank you for your help in anyway. Dani Michelle Paris 856-504-3329
